Horley Atletico 2 - 2 Fletching    23rd April 2005

An unexpected turn of events in the week, the award of three points and a third promotion place, left Fletching with a tantalising glimpse of promotion if they were to win this game. Unfortunately, the opposition were Horley, one of the strongest teams in the league, and already promoted. Nevertheless, Fletching were fired up, and put in a stong performance throughout the team.

The Archers started the brighter of the teams and scored mid-way through the first half with a great opportunist strike from Davidson past the keeper. The match was tight for the remainder of the half, until just before half time, when the keeper was expertly rounded by Pearce, who selflessly decided to let Pete become league top goalscorer, rather than taking the glory for himself, by squaring to the unmmarked striker who duly smashed home a second. As Fletching celebrated, the referee intervened, somehow ruling the goal out for offside.

Fletching were slow to start in the second half and were caught napping as a quick free kick led to a Horley equaliser. This was soon to be followed by a second from a powerful header. Fletching heads dropped as the win they needed slipped away from them, but the team continued to battle typically, with Minty playing through a nasty injury in the closing stages. Tackling in the midfield was fierce from Highland and Wolvey in particular, although the Horley player heard to remark that the overweight captain was "Their best player by a mile" was surely taking the piss.

A stunning second strike from Davidson late in the game left Fletching with 10 minutes to score the winner that would put them up, but it was not to come as Horley held firm. The team left the field disappointed, but with much to be proud about from the entire season.
