Name- Steve Barbe Date of Birth- 26/07/82 Position- Defence/Midfield, Asst.First Team Manager Nicknames- Barbster, Stelios, Tube Rider Previous Clubs- Burwash Date Signed- 08/2006 Appearences/Goals- 42/0 Barbe finally signed for The Archers in the summer of 2006, having impressed during a three-month trial at the end of the 05/06 season, whilst still at Burwash FC in the East Sussex League. Having swapped teams and leagues he made his Village debut against his former club in a pre-season friendly before making his full first team league debut against Scaynes Hill in September of 2006. A utility player who can slot into the back four or play wide on the wings, rumours are rife that Steve is actually Darren Wolvey’s love child. Much like his mentor he is slow and stocky (fat), loves nothing more than getting stuck into the tackles (or should that be pies) and doing the dirty work. He will openly admit he has a head like a fifty pence piece when it comes to his aerial prowess, but the tough tackler demonstrates a proficient awareness and passing ability, and loves nothing more than bombing forward when given the opportunity. A real live-wire and one of the most colourful characters you will find around The Recreation Ground, Barbe had a stint away at Burwash for the 08/09 season before returning for the forthcoming campaign. Likened to a white Titus Bramble he is a great addition to the squad and continues to impress in every game he plays as he establishes himself as what is sure to be a fan favourite. Just don’t invite the safe cracker on any of Fletching FC Golf Society days. After drunken exploits at Horam ‘All You Can Drink For £42.50’ Park Golf Course he single-handedly got us banned from the venue and is likely to tarnish The Archers good name!
Name- James Barter Date of Birth- 7/08/85 Position- Midfield/Defence/Striker Nicknames- Titch Previous Clubs- Uckfield Town Youth Date Signed- 08/2001 Appearences/Goals- 138/30 Arguably the most versatile player at the club, Barter signed for Fletching in the summer of 2001 as part of the infamous 'Tesco Two' along with his sidekick Richard Clark. Despite only having youth game experience under his belt, Brockhurst immediately realised his potential, slotting him straight into the First Team, filling the void left by Archers legend Matt Lingham, proving the old adage that if your good enough your old enough! Several glorious seasons followed for James, who is referred to as 'Titch' and he made a lasting impression on the fans before going to university. A dab hand with the Deep Heat, in a recent interview the former 'Deli Counter Demon' cited influential Archers hero Sol 'Wee Man' Keoshgerian as his inspiration - "he made a name for himself in the game, despite the prejudices in the early years about his lack of height...". After being on a three year part-time contract due to his university commitments, the board offered him a full time deal as joint player manager of The Reserve Team at the start of 07/08 season, before sensationally resigning his post in pursuit of First Team action, where has gone on to once again prove himself as one of the most committed and best players to wear the orange shirt. His immense pace, close control and exemplary first touch, which see him weave up and down the pitch, are his main assets. However he is also one of the bravest and will fly in with the tackles. This all-round ability should yield more goals for the youngster but as of yet he has failed to recapture his goal scoring form of the early days.
Name- Martin Belford Date of Birth- Position- Goalkeeper Nicknames- Belly Barnet, The Slim Chris Hartup Previous Clubs- Uckfield Town Date Signed- 08/2008 Appearences/Clean Sheets- 16/1 After losing one gangly nutter of a keeper, the Archers gained another in Belford when he signed for the club in the summer of 2008 along with the notorious ‘non-striking’ striker Ross Mockford! The former Uckfield Town man settled into club life very well and often seems to be on the receiving end of many a stupid and pointless joke. The big haired, bouffant shot stopper with a booming kick, clearly models his Barnet on Archers legend Chris Hartup and his game on the continental men, preferring to dramatically punch clear crosses rather than catch them. He featured regularly in both first and reserve team football during his first term, and will no doubt look to up his game this season after an influx of goalkeepers who have their sights set on this specialist position.

Name- Chris Brady Date of Birth- 16/01/81 Position- Defence/Midfield Nicknames- Sooty Previous Clubs- Maresfield Date Signed- 08/2006 One of only two natural left footers at the club, Brady signed official terms in July 2006 (the alleged bung inquiry involving two crates of Melton Mowbray pork pies is still ongoing) after training with The Archers for the back end of the 05/06 campaign, all this despite still being on Maresfield’s books, even playing a hastily arranged friendly against Burgess Hill Albion where he made his debut for the First Team. Having played Mid-Sussex and Brighton League football for much of his career, the disillusioned Brady made the mile trip to The Recreation Ground, where he has since patiently waited for an opportunity to establish himself. His competitive debut came for the Reserves against Danehill in the cup, before making his much anticipated league debut the following week against Hartfield. The quiet and mild mannered defender or holding midfielder will no doubt take time to win over the demanding Barn End contingent. Brady is an old skool type of player, going about things with an inner confidence and a smile on his face, keeping to his own game and doing the dirty work. A real unsung hero of the team much in the same mould as influential midfielder Neal Head, unlike some of the more flamboyant Fletching fan favourites, whose footballing and personal lives are very much part of the media lime light (Steve Barbe etc). Nicknamed ‘Sooty’ (a long story, but its not because he likes a fist up his arse!), the hard grafting Liverpool FC lover certainly lacks pace, but more than makes up for it with his passing, aerial threat and general attitude around The Recreation Ground, which saw him pick up the Clubman of the Year Award during his first season. It is just a shame that his shooting is not up to the same standard as his aptitude for darts. The Bobby George wanna-be is more like a treble one than ‘180’ when it comes to finding the back of the net, indeed he will give goalkeeper Darren Bradley a run for the money in the ‘least goals scored in a Fletching career’ award!
Name- Neil Bradford Date of Birth-26/07/59 Position- Midfield/Defence Nicknames- Nails, Dessy, Desert Orchid Previous Clubs- Fletching, Wealden Date Signed-08/2005 Neil is another Wealden import who returned to his boyhood club, for he was part of the legendary Fletching line up of the late eighties and early nineties, before they re-formed. A towering and imposing holding midfielder who can also play at centre back, Nails is a tireless workhorse who commands his line with strong authority. The perfect target man at corners, he will be the first to admit he is not the quickest (he is in his late forties after all!), but nothing gets past him in the air and he loves roaming forward with his assured first touch and boundless energy, earning him the Player's Player Award in his first season. He followed this up the following year by becoming only the second ever player, after Jamie Funnell to win this prestigious award twice. A long term target of The Archers, Bradford was brought in by close friend and head scout Darren Wolvey, to offer some much needed experience to a relatively young back four, finally agreeing personal terms in August 2005 after several months negotiation over his goal bonus!
Name- Darren Bradley Position- Goalkeeper Nicknames- Bradders, The Monk, Mr. Lob, Ducks Arse Previous Clubs- Wealden Date Signed-08/1998 After failing with the Wealden IV team, Bradley took his ball home with him and started his own club. Following a string of below-par performances he found himself dropped to The Reserves where he has since turned things around (to a certain degree), keeping numerous clean sheets, enjoying promotions and providing the safe hands required for the demanding rigours of Division Seven football. Recent seasons have seen him sidelined with injuries and an influx of younger, fitter; more agile goalkeepers come into the club, trying to claim his number one spot. However, the ‘Comb-Over King’ has shrugged off all-comers, continually adding to his 200 plus appearances for the village club. Always guaranteed to provide the on-field Chucklevision-esq calamities and howlers, Bradley is ‘Mr Fletching’ doing anything and everything around the club and behind the scenes. His crowning glory came in 2003 against Ansty when he came up for a corner in dying seconds of the game to powerfully head home an equaliser. It was an important goal as The Archers gained promotion that year and is a story that Bradley will roll out at any given opportunity, lecturing the youngsters on every conceivable detail (wind direction, match ball weight, stitching on Ansty’s socks etc) until they are bored stiff!
Name- Pete Burchett Date of Birth-14/10/81 Position- Striker Nicknames- Barndoor, Micky Pearce Previous Clubs-Fletching Academy Date Signed-08/1999 After joining the club several years ago as a goalkeeper for the Reserves, Pete decided to take matters into his own hands and start scoring goals rather than conceding them. His conversion to the role of ‘star striker’ was a successful one, seeing him given a chance in the first team where he has gone on to become The Archer’s all time leading goal scorer. An archetypal, old fashioned centre forward with bags of pace, Micky has that rare ability of being able to use both feet with deadly accuracy and to devastating effect, be it poaching from a couple of yards or popping up with a screamer from outside the box. Hard working and reliable (he has only missed one game in the past three years) Pete is an invaluable member of the squad, who should really score more than he does - Barndoor Banjo.

Name- Piers Carter Date of Birth- 17/6/76 Position- Manager/Midfield Nicknames- Cart Horse Previous Clubs- Framfield Church Date Signed- 08/1999 The passionate ex-player/manager who is well known for his infamous Spiderman (fathers for justice) costume, was entrusted with bringing the young players through and keeping the old boys happy as they saw out the remainder of their contract, when he took the helm of the reserve team ship at the start of the 2004/05 campaign, guiding them to their most successful season ever, finishing in third spot and gaining promotion along the way. He followed this up a year later with promotion to division seven, finishing on a high as he handed the managerial reigns over to Clark at the start of the 07/08 season. The life-long Charlton devotee is also a versatile midfielder in the same mould as Dennis Wise, with bags of enthusiasm who has been known to pop up with the occasional shinned stunner of a goal. The influx of young talent under Clark’s leadership has offered Carter little by the way of opportunity, but he has taken his chances well, dabbling on the wings or up front as he aims for that notable target of fifty career goals for the club.
Name- Richard Clark Date of Birth- 13/10/84 Position- Player/Manager Nicknames- Clarky Previous Clubs- Uckfield Town Youth Date Signed- 08/2001 Fletching’s youngest ever manager arrived at The Recreation Ground in June of 2001 from The Archer's Botswanan feeder club, signing professional forms in August after a successful two-week trial. Favoured by manager Wayne 'Buddha' Brockhurst, Clarke became a mainstay in the First Team during The Villagers golden era. Often likened to George Best, not for his footballing prowess but for his off-field antics, he headed off to university, where he promptly discovered the delights of birds and the booze. He has lost his pace (not that he had much anyway!!), gained a Wolvey-esq belly and has struggled to hold down a starting place. It has taken the shine off what was a promising career - the boy had the world at his feet, but it culminated in humiliation when he threw up at the bar in Uckfield’s premier nightspot the Broadway!! As a responsible manager his midfield antics have taken a back seat to the talented side he has helped forge, and thus competitive minutes on the pitch are at a premium, however they say that class is permanent and the midfield man can still do a fine job, showing great awareness, the hard tackler plays a simple style of football and enjoys the dirty work. Fully involved with the club and certainly one of the most dedicated he is a great addition to the squad.
Name - Steve Cork Date of Birth- 22/05/85 Position- Defence Nicknames- Sheepy, Sheep Head, Corkie Previous Clubs- Fletching Academy Date Signed- 08/2003 The boy racer with a big-bore exhaust is an old fashioned defender who very rarely ventures past the half way line, even though his manager would like him to, particularly after a stunning, solo run and long range effort against East Grinstead Mariners during the opening of 2007/08 season, which had got to be one of the best ever goals witnessed at The Recreation Ground. He has brought his simple, yet effective 'Peter Kay style' of no-nonsense football to The Archers first team, doing an excellent job at left back after playing all his career at right back for The Reserves, before making a central berth for himself under the guidance of Williams. He may not have the best of touches but the youngster can certainly tackle and is one of the bravest players, putting his body on the line in situations where others wouldn't with 100% commitment. Time and time again he can be seen making last ditch challenges and vital clearances off the line - always there when you need him. Commonly referred to as 'Sheepy' (it’s a long story, so make up your own minds, but its probably not what you think!!), it is a little known fact, until now, that his real name is actually Steven Cork!
Name- Michael Cronin Date of Birth- 18/10/81 Position- Midfield/Striker Nicknames- Sicknote, Anderton, Mr Whiplash, Cramp Boy Previous Clubs- Fletching Academy Date Signed- 08/1998 One of the most naturally gifted and skilful players ever to grace the hallowed Recreation Ground turf, Cronin progressed through The Archers youth system along side his old pal Jamie Funnell, before making his debut in 1998. The fancy-dan player is currently back for his second spell after taking a break from football. A midfield playmaker with a surprising viscous streak, who when called upon, can push up front as a target man, Cronin certainly lacks pace, but makes up for it with a fabulous first touch, vision and awareness. The type of player who can make the opposition look foolish, Mike can create something out of nothing, making it look so easy, and giving the impression he has more time on the ball than he does. The fan favourite and heartbeat of midfield was a natural choice for Clark to appoint captain at the start 07/08 campaign, the crux of most moves emanating from his gifted boots. However his fitness has always had a question mark by it and is therefore only on a month-to-month contract. The big man has been dogged by injury throughout his career (see nicknames!) and is guaranteed not to make it all the way through a match (he has only ever completed four games!), more often than not hobbling off with a relapse of cramp!
Name- Greg Dann Date of Birth-23/01/81 Position- Defence/Midfield Nicknames-Squealer, Fireman Sam, Ron Manager Previous Clubs-Framfield Church Date Signed-08/1998 A real club character, younger Dann brother Greg is rarely seen without his trademark sheep skin coat. What with his job as a fire fighter and choice of 'unique' Eskimo style type hat, the big guy clearly loves to live life dangerously! A faithful servant to The Village side for many years, Dann has made over 150 appearances in the famous orange shirt, scoring only quality goals in moderation thanks to his tremendous shooting ability. The defender or midfield man who loves to the let the whole world know he has been tackled (see nicknames), is also adept to playing just behind the front two and can certainly cause a stir, changing the course of games when he gets the ball in at his feet, for this lad can just run at teams - single handily carving out goal scoring opportunities for himself and others. A connoisseur of the local music scene, the tee-totaller can normally be found hidden in the corner of The Six Bells with a Coca Cola making mental notes of the talent (both women and the bands!).
Name- Mark Dann Date of Birth-08/06/79 Position- Defence/Goalkeeper Nicknames- Danno, Baron, Porn King Previous Clubs- Framfield Church Date Signed-08/1999 Like all promising footballers, Dann senior made his mark playing for the Reserves before getting his big break for the First Team. A highly versatile footballer who normally resides in the back four, he can also slot seamlessly into that specialised position of goalkeeper. A role that has won the hot-head, with a somewhat volatile temperament, accolades when he picked up the managers award at the end of 06/07 season for his efforts between the sticks. His footballing ability speaks volumes, as does his specialist DVD collection. As most of you are aware he is the “Mr Blockbuster” of XXX entertainment.

Name- Paul Dickens Date of Birth- 24/9/71 Position- Defence/Midfield/Striker Nicknames- Dicko Previous Clubs- Barcombe, Fletching Date Signed- 08/1999 Playing as a teenager in the original Archers team that resided at The Recreation Ground during the late eighties and early nineties, Dickens re-joined the club in 1999 after a long spell at Barcombe. A very quiet character, 'The Silent Assassin' is a fine finisher who has been ravaged by numerous injuries throughout his career. Most famously he was kept out of the game for a long spell by one of his own players, when Darren Bradley came charging out of his box (the only time he has ever come off his line!) to clear a ball, but only proceeded in going straight through Dicko! The jury is still out on his best position - a debate that has seen much media coverage. In recent years he has reverted to a central defensive position – a role that he has made his own, putting in numerous man-of-the match winning performances. What is clear though is that whether he is playing in defence, in midfield just behind the front two, or as an out an out striker he still finds the net on a regular basis and brings a wealth of experience to the youngsters around him in The Reserves.
Name- Luke Donnelly Date of Birth-11/02/87 Position- Midfield/Striker Nicknames- YTS, Motty Previous Clubs- Fletching, Uckfield Town Date Signed-08/2007 After being released as trainee by Fletching's bitter rivals Wealden (where he cleaned the boots of Armenian international and current Archer ‘Champagne’ Sol Keoshgerian) and an unsuccessful trial at Uckfield Town, Hall of Famer Craig ‘Rio’ Miller spotted Luke’s talent and he joined The Recreation Ground team in 2005. Donnelly instantly commanded a place in The Reserves injecting some much needed youth and making a real impact. This did not go unnoticed by Hyland and it was not long before he made his first team debut, coming on as a substitute against East Court in December of 2005. During his first spell with the village club Donnelly was the youngest member of the 40-man squad and earned the nickname YTS, which has since stuck. He failed to establish himself in a much stronger Reserve team during his second year and went back to Uckfield Town early in 2006/07 season where he was promised regular senior football, before ‘Titch’ Barter and ‘Ping’ Clark coaxed him back to The Recreation Ground for the start of the 07/08 season, where he has gone on to establish himself as a First Team regular. The winger with a feisty temperament is a handful for any opposition thanks to his natural pace; he has a powerful shot for a young lad, is not afraid to wade in with the tackles, or pull a few tricks out of the bag. Most at home on the right wing (or slaving over the grill in Little Chef where he used to be found charging over the odds for a slice of toast!), he is also a useful striker. Definitely one for the future as he develops his awareness and positional play which will undoubtedly come with experience of playing more regularly at this level.
Name- Ian Dowding Date of Birth-12/06/73 Position- Midfield/Striker Nicknames- Elton, IDS (Ian Duncan Smith) Previous Clubs- Barcombe, Uckfield Town Date Signed-08/2003 Ian made an instant impression with the Fletching faithful, after joining the club from Barcombe, thanks to Bradders scouting ability and successful negotiation skills. The highly versatile powerhouse, who can play anywhere across the middle of the park or up front, was The Archers second top scorer in his maiden season. His mammoth, scud-like throws into the box, combined with a loud grunting noise, which sounds like a pig being done up the arse by a shire horse (if you can imagine that - I don’t really know what that sounds like) are a thorn in the side of any opposition team - if anything it puts them off!! Despite looking like a member of the Tory Party or Elton John in his Kiki Dee days and having a stunning resemblance to Homer Simpson, his footballing pedigree shines through. The Fletching ‘fitness-guru’ will win anything in the air and is always up for a physical battle. Dowding now offers his services to the Reserve Team where he has established himself as a main stay since 2005, enjoying a spell as assistant manager in 2006. Deceptively fast for a big bloke, Ian is a tough tackler with bags of skill who likes nothing more than to run at defenders with the ball at his feet. The ‘Receding Wizard’ will always guarantee goals - Like a Rocket Man!
Name- Michael Duff Date of Birth-26/06/82 Position- Defence, Midfield, Forward Nicknames- Duffy, Duffster Previous Clubs- Fletching Academy Date Signed-08/1998 A late developer to the game, Duff was one of the young bucks to star in Fletching’s inaugural 1998/99 campaign. The former Manchester Utd fan, who now supports Leeds, can play anywhere on the park. In fact during the 2005/06 season within the first two months he had played in virtually every position except in goal! Ian Rumens favourite all time player, the journeyman returned to the club in 2005 after several years as a student/bum. The dead-ball specialist with a passion for poncey football boots, has had more nancy looking hairstyles than Beckham and considers himself a bit of an enforcer (no pun intended!), always squaring up to the opposition after a dodgy challenge - its just lucky there weren't many there to witness him square up to one big defender who he half-heartedly slapped in the chest before cowardly jogging back into position (running away). A dedicated individual, who makes the trip from Brighton every week, and has rarely missed a game since returning a couple of years, Duff has brought a lot to the team with his versatility, pace, great first touch, precision passing and crossing ability.
Name- Frank Egleton Date of Birth- 29/03/83 Position- Midfield/Foward Nicknames- Fun Time Frankie Previous Clubs- Uckfield Town, Maresfield Date Signed- 08/2007 Fletching looked to be onto a winner when Egleton scored on his debut against AFC Grinstead, but his initial season and success has been blighted by injury and illness which has meant he has found little consistency in an often changing side, being restricted to some nifty cameo roles. The midfielder, who has had more clubs than Nick Faldo, signed for The Archers from Uckfield Town in the summer of 2007, and fancies himself as a bit of a striker, however this is clearly not the case and when in front of goal the lad has had more misses than Darren Day. When afforded a chance though the maestro certainly looks the business, controlling the middle of the park in the creative role, thanks to his glittering collection of nimble, fancy-dan moves and tricks that wouldn’t look out of place in a Michael Jackson video. In fact it is a testament to ‘Fun Time’ that future hall-of-famer Michael Cronin cites him as being the most skilful player at The Recreation Ground. Aside from Fletching, the seasoned Mid-Sussex campaigner also turns out for his local pub side on a Sunday, even going between the sticks for a number of matches where he has assured us that he was ‘simply amazing’ - a claim that not even The Villagers most hapless ‘keeper Darren Bradley is worried about in the slightest! With a contact book that dwarfs even that of Wolvey and Barbe’s put together, the ‘Pub Watch Pin-Up Boy’ is a Facebook slag and boasts over four hundred online ‘friends’. I mean come on who really has over four hundred friends.....’Fun Time’ of course – he is everybody’s friend!

Name- James Funnell Date of Birth- 04/09/81 Position- Defence/Midfield Nicknames- Alpay, White Vieira, Buttocks, Forest Previous Clubs- Fletching Academy Date Signed- 08/1998 Despite his youthful looks, James has been at Fletching for longer than anyone can remember, having come through the successful youth set up. Owing to his newly acquired potbelly, in recent years the former energetic midfielder has reverted to a defensive role where he can be found giving his manager nightmares due to his risk taking and extrovert style of play. However, in a throw-back to his hay day, under the guidance of Williams he has found a new lease of life in his spiritual midfield home. The big centre back or holding midfielder has no pace what so ever and often gets a nose bleed when he ventures past the half way line with one of his mazy runs, but the lad has a trademark drop of the shoulder and can show a smart change of direction. Pace clearly isn't and issue when you have a lovely first touch and can read a game like Forest does, showing great vision and awareness. Funnell, who holds the record for the most ever appearances for The Archers, was appointed First Team captain for the 2006/07 season and is a commanding presence wherever he plays, always barking orders and encouragement; he boasts an impressive 1 in 2 goal scoring record (one goal every two seasons!). He also holds the less impressive record of fastest substitution, earning him the nickname 'Forest' and 'Buttock', coming off after only thirty seconds, having gone in for the first challenge and injuring his backside! A firm favourite with the fans, James describes himself as "Fletching through and through" and it is common knowledge that he wishes to see out the remainder of his career at the club he loves.

Name- Neal Head Date of Birth-26/6/75 Position- Midfield Nicknames- White Makelele, The Head Previous Clubs- Free Agent Date Signed- 08/2003 The hard grafting midfield heavyweight will give you nothing less than 110% effort, running his socks off until he is blowing out of his arse! A likeable character, who has settled in to club life effortlessly after putting pen to paper at the start of the 03/04 season, Neil is evidently committed the club, often travelling all the way from Hailsham on a cold, wet Wednesday night for training (except when his beloved Man Utd are on the box). One of the most improved players at the club, he made his First Team debut in 2005 after a string of fine performances for the two's, but failed to establish himself in a strong midfield, before becoming instrumental in Carter's promotion winning side of 05/06, being awarded Player of the Year for his efforts. He missed most of The Reserves successful 06/07 season due to work commitments, but looks set to be a regular feature of Clark’s Reserve Team. The driving instructor, certainly ‘drives’ the midfield (get it?!), doing the dirty work with a smile on his face, big in the tackles and with a surprising amount of skill, he plays it simply, but effectively and has been hailed as 'the white Makelele'. |
Name- Mark Hill Date of Birth- 08/11/67 Position- Defence Nicknames- Badger, The Berated One, Silver Fox Previous Clubs- Wealden, Framfield Church Date Signed- 08/1998 Another of the Fletching originals, Badger came over from Wealden FC with Bradders and Co and firmly cemented his place at the heart of The Archers defence. Despite reaching 40 years old the stalwart, who has over 150 appearances to his name, shows no signs of flagging and at times puts the younger members of the team to shame with his superior fitness. Affectionately know as ‘The Badger’ due to his crisp, flowing grey locks, and not as is rumoured , because of all his night time activity, Mark is the ultimate professional and well rounded defender. A great man-marker, he’s got pace, power, passing and aerial ability, and of course presence, brought about by the many years of experience roaming the pitches in the Mid-Sussex league, which in recent years he has brought to The Reserve Team.
Name- Phil Holford Date of Birth- 07/12/81 Position- Defence/Midfield Nicknames- Pip Previous Clubs- Wealden, Buxted, Fairwarp, Hailsham Town Date Signed- 08/2004 Quiet and unassuming off the pitch, but a real hot head when he steps on the park, Holford is known as the Mido of Fletching, owing to the fact that he has already had spells with several local clubs despite his young age. The adaptable 'Pippen', who is all skin and bones, signed for the club in 2004 and now seems fully settled, clearly enjoying it both on and off the pitch, picking up the end of season manager’s award two years running in 2005 and 2006. A great addition to the squad, who makes a real contribution to the team, the tough tackling full back demonstrates fine composure and a lovely touch. He loves nothing more than pushing forward and linking up with the midfield men, but still remains disciplined enough to keep his shape. He is always back doing the defensive dirty work when you least expect it but need him the most.

Name- Stuart Jefford Date of Birth- 17/3/75 Position- Defence/Midfield Nicknames- Stu, Jaffa Previous Clubs- Wealden Date Signed- 08/1998 A pint-sized wonder who has certainly adhered himself to the fans after a long and successful career at The Recreation Ground, the thirty-something winger has more recently reverted back to defence - a position where he made his name in the early days of Fletching. A fixture secretary with a feisty temper, Stuart never shirks a challenge, causing havoc with his terrier like antics on the wings. in fact he has often been compared to Archers legend Sol Keoshgariean (but without all the diving and ‘simulation’ play of Fletching’s first foreign import!). It was a Roy of The Rovers moment, a boyhood dream come true, when in 1998 he signed for The Villagers, putting pen to paper for the team he supported as a lad. He will though, forever be remembered for that infamous sending off in cup match where The Jaffa comically punched the ball (double handed!!) off the line, al la a continental keeper, five minutes into the game! |
Name- Tsolag Keoshgerian Date of Birth- 03/10/64 Position- Midfield/Striker Nicknames- Wee-man, Champagne Sol, Turk Previous Clubs- Wealden, Trojans Date Signed- 08/1998 The poisoned dwarf has been likened to a mini-Jurgen Klinsmann since exploding onto the Fletching scene in the late 90s, after forming the club with good pal Darren Bradley. The Sol Man has been at the helm of the good ship Fletching in the role of chairman for a number of years now. In recent years his playing career has taken more of a back seat as he makes way for the talented youngsters The Archers have managed to procure, opting instead to tear up the Spanish golf courses that surround his overseas apartment, where he is frequently confused with Ronnie Corbett. Well past his sell by date and once voted 'Fletching's Second Ugliest Man', the ankle biter of a winger can still produce the goods in the big games, winning numerous dodgy free kicks and dubious penalties, before disappearing into the bar for a flute of Dom Perignon '65.
Name- Martin Leeves Date of Birth- 02/10/74 Position- Midfield Nickname- Pussy Footer Previous Clubs- Wealden Date Signed- 08/1999 Another former Wealden player who signed for The Archers in 1999, linking up in the middle with his good friend Chris Hartup, Leeves is a classy midfielder who possesses great control and vision, though he insists on pussyfooting around! A live wire in the changing rooms, Leeves is a true puppet master, who can single handedly win games, carving open teams with his precision passing and delicate touches. A true fan favourite with awesome awareness and creativity, the pussy footer is a dead ball specialist and Fletching’s very own ‘Mr Nice Guy’. The playmaker is always good for a few goals each season and despite his youthful appearance brings a lot of experience to the team, having played at a higher level. His genuine all round ability did not go unnoticed by the Barn End Faithful, who promptly voiced their anger when Leeves requested to play for The Reserves at the start of the 05/06 season. After much public outcry he was recalled to The First Team, before making the same decision and sticking to it a year later. After impressing the new management team during the Villagers tough pre-season campaign of 07/08, he was recalled for First Team action where he has since gone on to maintain his high standards of play for Williams.

Name- Matt Newman Date of Birth- 28/12/81 Position- Midfield/Striker Nickname- Mr Kipling, Matty Previous Clubs- Maresfield Date Signed- 08/2006 Newman made the short two mile move to The Recreation Ground from local rivals Maresfield Village together with his good friend Chris ‘Sooty’ Brady in July of 2006, eventually signing Mid-Sussex forms in August. He made an instant impression on his debut – a pre-season game against Burwash where he came on to play, what is now his customary, simple passing style of football, changing the course of game in the process. He continued to impress during the summer months in the build up to the league campaign, netting a couple of goals, one of which was against his former club. His ability, dedication and application did not go unnoticed and he has gone on to be a regular in Carter’s Reserve team plans. A pacey and direct team player, who can play on either wing or up front as a striker, Newman possesses a fine touch and can run with the ball at his feet, playing a simple game and bringing a reassurance to those around him. Known as the Gary ‘Mr Nice Guy & England Legend’ Lineker of Fletching, due to his impeccable clean cut, family man image (on and off the pitch), Matty does enjoy a drink or several with the lads when his Mrs allows and his reputation promptly goes straight out the window! After a string of fine performances the master baker made his First Team debut in October of 2006, coming on as a sub in The Archers cup win against AFC Ringmer. Further appearances for the front side are sure to follow if he maintains his current high standards and dedication providing of course he ditches his former club’s training top which he still insists on wearing around the Recreation Ground much to the disgruntlement of the hardcore Barn Enders.

Name- Dan Phillips Date of Birth- 13/03/93 Position- Backroom Staff/Supporter Nickname- Mini Minty, Mini Previous Clubs- N/A Date Appointed- 08/2004 Lifelong Fletching fan and official club mascot Dan ‘Mini Minty’ Phillips’s dreams came true when his father ‘Minty Senior’ signed in 2004. A die-hard Archer and founder of their junior supporters section, he has immersed himself fully, turning his hands to all aspects within the club. Not only is he certified Reserve Team linesman, he pens match reports, coaches and warms up goalkeepers in their pre-match routines, is the water boy and carries out a whole host of back room duties that often go unnoticed. The playing staff have taken well to Mini, inviting him join in training sessions with his heroes most weeks, where he is also very much part of the banter. A real Fletchingite in the making, if he continues with this sort of enthusiasm surely it won’t be long before he picks up the converted ‘Club Man of the Year’ gong. Tottenham come a close second to the schoolboy's number one choice, choosing to spend most of hard earned pocket money in The Villagers club shop and on match day tickets, where he takes advantage of his U-16 concession (most of which, if rumours are to believed, end up on E-bay!!)
Name- Pat Phillips Date of Birth- 04/07/66 Position- Goalkeeper Nicknames- Minty Previous Clubs- Nutley, Wealden Date Signed- 08/2004 They say you have to be a bit of a nutter to be a goalkeeper, and none is this more applicable than with Phillips! After doing the rounds in local football, Minty has found his spiritual home at Fletching after having had long spells with both Nutley and Wealden. Named after the mechanic who was trying to get it on with Sam Mitchell in Eastenders, the big kicking goalkeeper made a real impact at the back, picking up the Player of the Year award during his first season. Never one to be out spoken on the pitch, the gentle giant brings a real presence to the team, always barking orders, shouting encouragement, showing great vision and awareness. The budding pantomime actor (he played Widow Twanky the other year!) and hardcore drummer demonstrates tremendous agility and is a brilliant shot stopper for someone with such a big frame. Phillips announced his retirement to a stunned media audience at the end of the 2006/07 season, but was immediately lured back into the fold by Clark as assistant Reserve Team boss and goal keeping coach; where he has since gone on to make further appearances for both First and Reserve Teams. Always guaranteed to get an injury at least once every game, Pat is Darren Bradley's footballing hero.
Name- Toby Powell Date of Birth- 10/06/85 Position- Midfield/Striker Nicknames- Tobes, Sinead Previous Clubs- Fletching Academy Date Signed- 08/2003 After several years away from the game Toby put the wilderness years behind him to make a real impact in the Reserves recent league challenges, finishing top goal scorer in his first season. He is yet to recapture this sort of form due to work commitments and limited opportunity, but will always serve up a number of goals, and is a great addition to the squad, providing a unique source of entertainment and piss taking, both on and off the pitch. (the six pointer story, the engine degreaser story etc). With the emergence of Dowding as lone striker, and an influx of swift wingers he fell down the pecking order during Carter’s last promotion winning tenure, but made the step up to division three with the first team, looking settled when he came off the bench. Powell played an integral part in nicknaming youngster Dan ‘Dogger’ Benton when he came to the club (see hall of fame), and it is widely regarded that his legs are made of rubber. The slippery, striker or attacking midfielder who is full of running, models himself on former Toon legend Faustino Asprilla, always managing to come away with the ball in the most unlikely of circumstances - his footballing talent certainly outshines his notorious golfing ability. Nothing compares to you Sinead.

Name- Chris Scott Date of Birth- 28/03/85 Position- Midfield Nicknames- Scotty, Scotty-Too-Hotty Previous Clubs- Buxted Date Signed- 08/2007 Quite simply one of the quickest and liveliest players ever to represent The Villagers, Scott has gone on to cement his place in the squad after making an immediate impact rampaging down the wings. Scotty (yet another original nickname I know) was one of the first names on manger Richard Clark’s wish list when he took over The Reserve Team in the summer of 2007, but he nearly lost out on his target after contract negations faltered, the former Buxted player almost deciding to return to his previous club after a pre-season spell at The Recreation Ground. However, according to media speculation, a word in the ear from work colleague and veteran Archer Marten Leeves steered him in the right direction. It was to be a correct decision for the darts fanatic, who has excelled all expectations since making his league debut for the twos against Ansty. The youngster has applied himself, proving a massive hit with the fans thanks to a wicked shot, his extrovert, attacking drive forward, superior fitness and above all his determination. The lad can still pick a pass and play it simple when need be, but are still question marks next to his defensive qualities – but that is not what he is in the side for. His endeavours have brought about several first team appearances, but he has been an integral part of The Reserves fabulous start to the season where he should go on a notch a few more goals. A great signing, the midfielder is looking like a shrewd investment on the part of Clark who picked him up for a rock bottom fee.

Name- Rhys Williams Date of Birth- 24/02/85 Position- First Team Manager Nicknames- Lurch Previous Clubs- Burwash, Burwash Youth, Wycombe Youth Date Signed- 08/2007 Williams name had been linked with the vacant role at The Recreation Ground, since Hyland announced his retirement in 2007, after a glittering report from his representative Steve ‘Tube Rider’ Barbe; eventually entering contract negotiations after securing the majority vote at the AGM. He spent his playing days plying his trade in the East Sussex League with Burwash, where he was a product of their academy system. Working his way up through their youth teams he went on to become a mainstay in their front side, his height advantage making him an obvious centre back choice from day one. A hard hitting and uncompromising defender who felt at home when in possession of the ball’ Williams was all arms and elbows when it came to winning the ball in the air, enjoying a successful time with the club before breaking his leg in three places in a horrific challenge, in fact the opposition were unlucky not to be awarded what was a certain penalty! At the tender age of twenty-two he became The Archers youngest ever manager, after various coaching and management roles at his home town club and with Wycombe whilst at university. The seven foot something of a manager has at times struggled with the fame, choosing to shun the spot light, taking a back seat and leaving his trusty aid Barbe to handle the media (a very dangerous decision!). In a well documented first season, he has been put in charge of a young and developing side. Mentally strong and with the drive, passion and ability to handle this and the inflated egos consuming space in the changing room, he has set about the task, putting players in their place and clearly not afraid to make bold decisions and brash gambles, as he architects his new team. His influence is evident throughout the entire club, coaxing over several promising young players from his former side, strengthening The Reserves and also giving them a taste of First Team Football.
